Polyhedra around Us

The historical importance of geometry can be seen from the quote written on the door of Plato’s philosophy school,

of geometry enter.”

What are polyhedra?

A polyhedron is a three-dimensional shape with polygons as faces. Five Platonic solids and 13 Archimedean solids are well known.

Platonic Polyhedra

A Platonic polyhedron has a single species of polygonal faces.
The five Platonic polyhedra include tetrahedra, octahedra, and dodecahedra with triangular faces, as well as cubes (with square faces) and icosahedra (with pentagonal faces).

Tetrahedron
Four faces

Cube
Six faces

Octahedron
Eight faces

Dodecahedron
Twelve faces

Icosahedron
Twenty faces

Archimedean Polyhedra

The five Platonic polyhedra include tetrahedra, octahedra, and dodecahedra with triangular faces, as well as cubes (with square faces) and icosahedra
(with pentagonal faces).

Archimedean Polyhedra

An Archimedean polyhedron consists of two or more regular polygonal faces.
There are 13 types of polyhedra (more than Plato’s polyhedral)
because they can have triangles, squares, pentagons, hexagons, octagons, and octagons as the faces.

Polyhedra around Us

If you look carefully, you can actually find various types of polyhedra everywhere, ranging from the East and West, ancient and modern times, and natural and artificial objects. The examples include the Juryong-gu of Silla, Egyptian pyramids, honeycombs, and viruses.
